UPDATE: New Import conditions for Bamboo and combined import conditions for Cane, Rattan, Willow and Wicker
After receiving several enquiries from importers this notice has been amended to clarify the proposed changes.
This alert is to inform industry of proposed changes to import conditions for bamboo and combined import conditions for Cane, Rattan, Willow and Wicker. The proposed conditions will apply for shipments arriving on or after 2 May 2011.
The changes are:
- Methyl bromide will no longer be an acceptable quarantine treatment for bamboo;
- The Cane and Rattan ICON case and the Willow and Wicker ICON case will combine to form one ICON case;
The AQIS approved treatments for bamboo are as follows:
a) Heat treatment at 74ºC for at least 60 minutes once the core temperature has been reached (T10025); or
b) Kiln drying at 74°C (165°F) for 4-18 hours depending on thickness of timber (T9912) (see AQIS’s ICON for detail of kiln drying treatment mentioned under T9912). Please note that treatment time does not commence until the temperature and humidity in the chamber have stabilised and the core temperature of the timber has reached at least 74°C (165°F); or
b) Fumigated with ethylene oxide under initial minimum vacuum of 50 kilopascals at 1200g/m³ for 5 hours at 50ºC; or 1500g/m³ for 24 hours at 21ºC (T9020); or
c) Gamma irradiation at 25 kGray (T9651); or
d) Export or destruction.
Treatments for Cane, Rattan, Willow and Wicker will remain unchanged from their current ICON cases until further notice.
Importers should ensure they have up to date information by regularly checking ICON (www.aqis.gov.au/icon) or by contacting AQIS. For current import conditions for Bamboo articles, Cane and rattan articles and Willow and wicker articles - Driedplease check ICON.
